I’ll pray on Sunday.

I’ll listen to a sermon on Sunday.

I’ll praise on Sunday.

I’ll just wait for church on Sunday and then read my Bible then.

Do any of these phrases sound familiar to you? Maybe it’s because you’ve said it or at least heard some of your Christian friends say it.

Some Christians have a habit of putting off their spiritual growth for Sunday.  During the week and weekend however, they do whatever they want to do. Work. Party. Watch series. Everything but seek the Lord.

Yet, that is not how God wants us to live. God does not call us to be Christ-like or to pursue Christ-like things only on Sunday. He does not want us to seek Him only on Sunday. He desires us to do all this every day.

Seek Christ Everyday

As Christians we are supposed to seek the Lord every single day. Not only on one day of the week. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that we are supposed to be constantly in communion with God and turning to His Word every day.

Joshua 1:8 says:

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

And Psalm 1:2-3 says:

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

These Scriptures make it clear that as Christians we are supposed to be praying, seeking God, praising Him and meditating on His Word regularly. Day and night it says. And that’s not only one day and night, but many.

These Scriptures also reveal why we should be seeking God constantly instead of saving it for Sunday.

What Happens When You Save it For Sunday

Seeking God regularly is how we gain spiritual strength as Christians. That is, strength to prosper both physically and spiritually in all seasons of life.

But when you save seeking the Lord for Sunday, you will miss out on this. You also miss out on the refreshment and rejuvenation that comes with spending time with the Lord.

You delay in receiving the revelation the Lord wants to give you and you miss out on the grace He wants to give you for each day.

Just as the Lord gave the Israelites manna for each day, not permitting them to save up for the next day (Exodus 16:15-21), God desires us to receive new instruction, revelation and knowledge every day. He does not want us to save up for tomorrow but to trust Him for a daily supply of all that we need.

Don’t Save it For Sunday, Start Today

Perhaps you’ve been part of the “Saving it for Sunday” club for a while. If you so, I suggest you start seriously reconsidering the way you approach your relationship with God and your spiritual growth.

“Saving it for Sunday” will keep you from maturing in Christ and becoming the person God wants you to be. It is also likely to lead to hypocrisy and living a double life, none of which you should aspire to do as a Christian.

Remember that part of salvation is relationship with God. A relationship in which you know God and most importantly, God knows you.

But this relationship must be developed every day not just on one day.

So why not start doing that now?

Stop putting off seeking the Lord for Sunday and pursue Him every day.
